Approach

Whitman Emorson is a boutique creative consultancy focused on strategic communication. We work closely with our clients to help them understand their core strengths and values, and to express themselves in compelling and powerful ways.

We apply a research-based, interdisciplinary approach to building communication strategies, always starting with a rigorous analysis of our clients’ capacities and objectives. We believe that strategic communication and design should go beyond logos and websites to touch virtually every aspect of a brand’s business. We unite big-picture thinking with meticulous, detail-oriented execution, working to translate our clients’ business objectives into purposeful and engaging design-driven solutions.

WE was founded in New York in 2010 by Whitney Geller and Yasemin Emory as a small-scale alternative to conventional agencies; soon after, Benjamin Leszcz joined the team. Our first clients included the restaurants 606 R&D and the Fulton Stall Market, and the Newark Educators’ Community Charter School, for whom we offered a broad strategic vision, ranging from a new visual identity

to a revised mission statement. Since then, we have relocated our offices to Toronto and expanded our client roster to include other restaurants (The Smile) and retailers (Red Canoe; Lily Ka), as well as the financial advisory service, Private Practice; the healthcare technology company, ALRT; and the Chinese business newspaper, International Outlook.

Presently, we are working with Brookfield Office Properties, contributing to the creative direction of Ideas City, a biennial festival exploring the future of urbanism, and New Fish City, the company’s soon-to-launch food and culture festival. We are also expanding our relationship with Allied Properties REIT, a Canadian commercial real estate company, launching the groundbreaking corporate social responsibility program, Make Room for the Arts, as well as the arts and creativity magazine, Block.

We specialize in:

  • Brand & Identity Strategy
  • Branded Content
  • Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy
  • Custom Publishing
  • Environmental Design
  • Exhibition Curation
  • Intelligence & Trend Reports
  • Non-Profit Work
  • Packaging Design

People

Whitman Emorson’s core team comprises three partners and a small group of talented designers. We also draw on a broad, global network of collaborators – including photographers, illustrators, curators, editors, web developers, interior designers and architects – as projects require.

After completing degrees at McGill University and the University of Warwick, Whitney Geller joined Bruce Mau Design, a creative agency distinguished by its interdisciplinary, socially conscious approach to design. Working for BMD in her hometown of Toronto, as well as Chicago and New York City, Geller focused on research and strategic design for a range of global brands, including MTV, Coca-Cola, The Mayo Clinic and the Oprah Winfrey Network. In 2010, she co-founded Whitman Emorson.

Toronto native Yasemin Emory started her career at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia in New York City, where she was the associate art director of the special projects group with a specific focus on book and editorial design. In 2010, Emory, who is a graduate of both McGill University and Parsons School of Design, joined the New York branding agency CO-OP, where she worked on a range of prominent real estate developments. In 2010, she co-founded Whitman Emorson.

Ben Leszcz started his career in publishing, and he has worked as an editor and writer for The Globe and Mail, enRoute, Details and Bon Appétit. After co-founding the online men’s magazine, DailyXY, he consulted on communication strategies with Google, Urban Outfitters and ESPA. In London, UK, at the creative agency Winkreative, he worked with such clients as Hermès, Porter Airlines and Hong Kong’s Swire Properties. In 2012, he joined Whitman Emorson as a partner.
